The skills based, instructional content and objectives of Bright Futures Learning reading program represent a balanced curriculum with five core elements of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary instruction, and comprehension.

The reading curriculum, based on Orton-Gillingham Method of Teaching and Alphabetic Principle, follows the sequence of skills and is aligned to the various state standards of California, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
